Committee Notes

For breeders in Victoria there are some tough times ahead , but we now very much welcome the recent announcement of Bernard Saundry to the Chairman’s role at HRV. Bernard has a superb resume as an administrator in both harness racing and the thoroughbred industry in Victoria and New Zealand. We look forward to working with Bernard and his fellow Board Members. Hopefully there will be two new appointments in the near future to aid the journey towards prosperity again in Victoria.

Redwood Day on a Sunday at Maryborough is now firmly entrenched as a jewel in the Victorian harness racing calendar. Once again in 2024 the racing was superb, the crowd was splendid and the Day reaffirmed the emergence of a bright new shining star of harness racing in the form of the three-year-old trotting filly Keayang Zahara. Congratulations to her and her breeder, owner connections, the Lee family, on her demonstrative victory in the Victorian Trotting Derby. Congratulations also to the Vicbred winner of the Redwood Classic Vytis, and her trainer and driver, Richard & Emmett Brosnan.

Victorian 2YOs in February

HRV will introduce weekly restricted two-year-old races from February 1 to create more opportunities for young horses. A racing department review of last year’s calendar found many early season two-year-old races failed to deliver sufficient field sizes to proceed. In an attempt to remedy this, HRV will program two-year-old races at central Victorian venues, where the category's population is greatest. For more, click HERE.

Nominations open for HRAC

Those with a passion for harness racing in Victoria are urged to nominate for an independent seat on the Harness Racing Advisory Council. The council was established under the Racing Act to advise Harness Racing Victoria’s Board on matters concerning harness racing, facilitate consultation between the Board and participants, and consider matters referred to it by the Board.
