From the President's Desk...
We congratulate all of our members on the sale of their yearlings at the Nutrien Sale, the final of the season. A mix of almost 50-50 trotters/pacers made for an interesting sale with what appeared to be something for all budgets.
HRA are yet to announce the details of their intended Slot Race concept, with an announcement expected in April. It is understood that a portion of the funding for the race may come from a stallion levy, despite the overwhelming submissions opposing such a concept in 2021 when the idea of such a levy was first proposed. No information is available at the time of writing as to the quantum of the levy or the conditions or rules attached to it. We all keenly await the announcement so that the industry can assess the pros and cons of the race concept. For the record HBV is not opposed to the Slot Race, however we have maintained the view that it should not be partly funded by a stallion levy as such a levy, in our view, will add to costs for our member breeders and increase the risk that breeding numbers will decrease as a result

Stallion Levy and Slot Race Proposal
The Committee of Harness Breeders Victoria would like to make it clear that our position, based on emphatic member feedback in regard to the proposed 10% stallion levies to fund a race series, remains unchanged. The Executive have, in writing to Harness Racing Australia chairman, Mr Graeme Campbell OAM, requested a meeting to discuss details of the new proposal mooted but not yet released.
This request was firmly declined by HRA.
The Executive will continue to actively pursue representation for members and the wider breeding industry in this matter and provide updates where possible. Read HRA's statement following the closure of the 2021 consultation process HERE.

2022 Nutrien Best Presented Yearling Awards
HBV were proud to partner with Nutrien Equine and Barastoc to recognise the four best presented trotting and pacing colts and fillies at this year's Melbourne Nutrien yearling sale. HBV provided a trophy, Nutrien presented garlands and sashes to the winning and highly commended yearlings while Barastoc contributed bags of feed to each preparer.
Judged by Dr Charlie El-Hage (University of Melbourne Veterinary Faculty) during the Woodlands Yearling Parade on the Saturday, these yearlings presented outstanding quality of coat condition, muscle development, athleticism, conformation, behaviour and overall impression while the handlers were competent and well presented. These awards were part of a broader initiative being developed by HBV to reward, encourage, educate and retain staff within the Standardbred breeding industry.
Congratulations to preparers Haley Lang, Alabar, Yabby Dam Farms and Rhiannon Park on their outstanding efforts as well as breeders Fusinato Bloodstock and Yorkshire Park - see the full results list HERE.

Breed to Succeed, thanks to Barastoc & KER
Brett Coffey (GM - Alabar) and Nick Hooper (Author, Stallions: Australian & New Zealand Foundation Sires) present two case studies in researching and matching sires to broodmares in this, the final in the 2021 series of Breed To Succeed. Compered by Campbell’s Comments and live questions from viewers, this is a unique opportunity to see the theory in practice.
You can catch up with any of our 2021 and 2020 series on Campbell's Comments YouTube Channel, or via the library on our website.
